Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of a Nature School Program?
Nature based programs allow us to learn, discover, and try new things in a way that establishes deep rooted connections to wildlife and our peers. Being in nature reduces our stress levels, bringing a sense of peace into our lives. Learning how to respectfully and sustainably hunt for our food brings us in close relation to our ancestors, as we all come rom hunter gatherer societies. You may begin to understand our relation to wildlife in a much deeper way than you ever thought was possible.
How do I know if this program is right for my child?
You know your child best. This program involves being outside in various weather conditions all year round, interacting with other children of diverse ages, and being able to follow safety directions and guidelines. This program can be a good introduction to interacting with nature and other children but if you feel it might be too much for your child at this time we encourage you to follow that feeling. Parents are welcome to stay during program to volunteer and/or offer additional support for their child if they like.
Will we be hunting on the hunting course?
No, we will not be doing a live hunt for the hunting education courses. We will spend time in the mind of the hunter and explore various scenarios for training purposes. If you wish to hire our staff to go on a hunt with you or to take you out hunting, you're in luck! We also offer these services and are booking for Fall 2024 seasons.
What will I be learning?
People in our programs will receive guidance from experience mentors, tailored to the specific course we are offering. For our hunting courses, you can expect to learn the basics of what is required to get started. All course will contain a blend practical information, hands on guidance, engaging activities, and sharing of your experience with the group. You will get to follow your natural curiosity as you go through each lesson. This allows you to learn a variety of skills while discovering your personal interests and strengths. We will cover things such as safety in nature, building fires, hands weapon handling, animal processing, government regulations, gear lists, wildlife knowledge, plant identification, and various biological concepts.
Could I get hurt?
Yes, it is possible. We will be handling knives and walking through the woods, or paddling a river depending on the course. Preventative measures are in place to ensure the safety of everyone. You will be guided how to properly take risk assessments and decide what is a safe decision or not. This builds confidence while minimizing injury. In the unlikely case of a major accident there will always be a staff member on site that is trained in First-Aid and CPR, as well as Wilderness First-Aid, and wilderness survival.
Are there program offerings for kids too?
Yes! Right now we offer a variety of workshops for kids and adults that interested in learning more about primitive building skills, hunting, foraging, animal and plant identification, animal tracking, birding, camping, and more! We are working with Wild Wonders Forest School which have sessions 4 days a week. For hunting specific courses - kids needs to be 12 and up! Please Check out our other offers HERE.
Why do we need to connect with Nature?
For our health and well-being. Time spent in nature is nourishment, for the soul, the mind, and the body. The scents, sights, sounds, and feelings we receive in nature are deeply rooted in our DNA and we need these inputs to maintain a balance in our lives. Being in nature for 20 minutes reduces stress hormone levels by up to 60%! As animals, our nervous systems are not adapted to the hustle and bustle of city life. Nature based learning incorporates movements that are fundamental to our bodies healthy development. Climbing, crawling, jumping, crouching, rolling, running, swimming are all examples that we do more readily while outside in nature. The vast majority of the population is deficient in Vitamin D - which we get from sunlight! In short - we need to be outside.
What is your refund policy?
